Tequila's origins date to the Aztecs in 200A.D. It is distilled from the blue agave plant, which flourishes in the semi-arid highlands of West Central Mexico, near the town of Tequila, after which it was named. Mexico is the world's sole provider producer, and 90% of its export is sold in the U.S., where tequila became popular in the 1950's, spread by tourista tales of margaritas, sunrises and mockingbirds.
